Healthy weight for the age, how big a kitten will get, and when that body type stops growing. House cats and large breeds do not share one curve.

Domestic shorthairs usually finish between 8 and 12 lb. Males sit higher. Maine Coons and Ragdolls keep filling out after the first year. Weight bands are a screen, not a diagnosis — a rib check and a vet visit beat any chart.

Common questions

How much should an adult cat weigh?

Most domestic shorthairs land between 8 and 12 lb (3.6–5.4 kg). Petite cats can be healthy at 5–8 lb. Large domestics often reach 11–16 lb. Maine Coons and Ragdolls sit higher, especially males.

How much should a kitten weigh?

A typical house kitten is about 2 lb at 8 weeks, 4 lb at 12 weeks, and 6–8 lb at 6 months. Use the chart for 7, 8 and 10 month checks. Litters vary.

How big will my cat get?

Enter current weight and age. The tool divides by the usual percent of adult size at that age, then checks the body-type range. Males usually finish heavier.

What age do cats stop growing?

Most house cats reach adult weight by 10–14 months. Males can fill out to 18 months. Maine Coons and Ragdolls often grow until 2–4 years.

Do male and female cats stop growing at the same time?

Females usually finish a little earlier. Males keep adding frame and weight for a few more months, longer in large breeds.

Is 15 pounds heavy for a cat?

Yes for an average domestic shorthair. It can be normal for a large male or a Maine Coon. Use body type plus a rib check, not one number.
